Yes, the majority of land in Hakuba is free hold title. There are exceptions in the Happo & Tsugaike areas where most property in the vicinity of the lifts is perpetual lease.

It is a 4 hour drive from Tokyo or can be accessed in just under 3 hrs using public transport (bullet train).
